Salticidae: Diagnostic Drawings Library Supplement

Genus Phidippus C.L. Koch, 1846

Diagnoses of genera of South East Asia: Phidippus (11-12; ?). Although our only species, P. severus (Thorell, 1891), might be close to Phidippus, it is very unlikely to belong to this genus. Phidippus seems to be, almost exclusively, a large New World genus. It is a genus which is often collected simply by sweeping vegetation and it is surprising that no more specimens have turned up since the male collected on Pinang and mentioned by Workman, 1896. Phidippus belongs to Simon's Dendryphanteae, a large group which, curiously, is very poorly represented in south east Asia. P. severus was originally described by Thorell and made the type of the genus Megatimus, a genus which may yet be resurrected.
Distribution: The records of Phidippus from India, Nicobar Islands, P. Malaysia and Japan are doubtful. The main region for this genus is the New World, with most species occurring in the USA. Murphy & Murphy 2000: 278. By courtesy of the Authors' and the Malaysian Nature Society.
